Valley Bible Church's AWANA Sparks

AWANA Sparks

Calling all K-2nd Graders to participate in a fun-filled excursion to get to know the Creator of this universe. The God who loves you more than you know!!

AWANA Sparks

Our AWANA Sparks program, for K-2nd graders provides a great opportunity to learn more about the God who loves you! Through memorization and devotional lessons from the Bible Sparks get to know God in a deeper way. Every week opens up new and exciting opportunities to meet new friends, learn teamwork and healthy competition, practice good sportsmanship, develop a love for ministry and outreach for Christ, while having lots of fun in the process.

Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children" (Matt. 19:14 NLT). Imagine the surprise the crowds and Jesus' own disciples must have felt at this profound declaration. In ancient times, children had little value, yet Jesus welcomed, blessed, and valued children. There is no greater joy than watching your children come to know, love and obey Christ.

We know that Proverbs 22:6 gives great wisdom in this, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it". Realizing that children are confronted with more difficult choices than ever before, our Bible-based program seeks to establish them on a firm foundation, which will provide direction for their daily lives. If your child is new to the AWANA program, we would encourage you to read through the Flight 3:16 Entrance Booklet your child will bring home on the first night they visit the club. When this Entrance Booklet is completed you will receive a Sparks uniform.

Club night

Each clubber will need to check in each Sunday at the secretary's table at about 2:55 p.m. (except on "Clubber Recognition" day which is held in the auditorium once a quarter). Please come in uniform and with athletic shoes for safety reasons during game time. Also, a Sparky bag can be purchased ($9) to hold workbooks and weekly paperwork; however, any bag will suffice.

Sunday night schedule:

2:55    Check in (Room 201)
3:00 - 3:10    Flag Salute, Introductions and Prayer
3:15 - 3:45    Book time (Rooms 101, 103, 201, 203)
3:45 - 4:15    Game Time
4:15 - 4:35    Green Meadow Time (Devotional)
4:35 - 4:45    Worship and/or Craft (when possible)
4:45 - 4:59    Awards, Closing Prayer & Announcements
5:00 or so   Dismissal to Parents

Parents need to wait for clubbers outside the Sparks room, which is upstairs in Room 201-203. Please line up against the west wall and we will dismiss each child as follows:

*Blue team will exit the north door - 203

*Red and Green teams will exit the middle door - 202

*Yellow team will exit the south door - 201

We have approximately 70+ Sparks and this will help to provide better organization and safety for the children. If you need to talk to a leader or the director, please feel free to enter and do so. Please be patient with us as we always make every attempt to dismiss Sparks on time; however, due to the size of our club and varied activities we may run over a few minutes. This will not be the rule, but the exception, God willing!

Club organization

Our Sparks Club has four teams: Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. Your child will be assigned to a team color and will remain on that team throughout the year unless team balancing is necessary. It is important that you encourage your child to participate as a team member and support their team in learning verses and participating in game time as well as other AWANA activities. Incentives and earned awards will be given out each week.

We really appreciate the parent's effort in making the Sparks book a devotional at home and a special time for the child. Please help your child accomplish at least 1-2 verses/week and initial the pages your child has completed during the week. Your initials can simply be placed anywhere on the page except the leader's box. In order to receive the Review patch, review of the entire book is necessary.

Awards and prizes

Small incentives will be provided for all Sparks that complete a section each week in addition to earned AWANA awards. It is important that once the clubber has earned their vest, they wear it to club each night, unless other wise instructed, because most of their awards will be placed on the vest. Individuals and one color team will be selected each week for cooperative, respectful, loving, Christian character. We will also be giving team prizes for good sportsmanship on a monthly basis. If there are any allergies we need to know about, please inform the leader and secretaries ASAP.

Once a quarter we will be meeting first in the auditorium to recognize the Sparks during the Clubber Recognition night. We encourage parents to attend to support the children. Note: Check in will be done in the foyer of the main auditoriium. All Sparks will be required to sit together in the sanctuary for this presentation. Any parent or family member may join them or sit in the rear.

End of Year:

Awards night in May, plan to attend and support your Sparky! Ribbons will be awarded to all Sparks who complete the first handbook - "Hang Glider" & the second handbook - "Wing Runner." Plaques will be given to those who have completed the "Sky Stormer" handbook.

Remember, review is not required; it is another opportunity to get an extra patch and Sparky pins are given to those who complete the extra credit cards. In addition, we will award "Christian Character Trait" awards.

Special Events:

We like to take the clubbers on several field trips throughout the year. We usually go to Apollo Park, a pumpkin patch, caroling at a retirement home, Easter outreach at the park, and the bowling alley. For some of these outings we will collect small amounts of money to purchase supplies (eg: pumpkins to decorate, gifts for the elderly, Gifts of Love and Missions Outreach, etc.)

Once again, we will be conducting our annual Bible Jamboree (Quizzing), Sparks Games and AWANA Grand Prix. Trophies, medals and ribbons will be awarded for all participants. We also hope to celebrate in worship with the congregation and elderly at nursing homes when possible.

Our prayer remains the same: that your children come to know the Lord more dearly through study of His Word and that they grow in their understanding of the Gospel & the Christian faith. We thank you so much for your prayers, patience and partnership in this ministry!!!
